Relationships & time together

How to make more time together on a small budget

Choose a manageable shared activity, agree a budget and give it a real place in your week.

The short answer

Ask each person for one simple activity they would enjoy, agree how much time and money you can spend, then choose a date. Shared time can be a walk, a meal at home or trying something new together.

Ask before planning

An elaborate surprise may be less useful than asking what each of you has energy for this week. One person might want an outing; the other may prefer a quiet hour at home. Start with those preferences rather than assuming that spending more makes the plan better.

Offer two manageable options and agree one. If caring responsibilities or work shifts affect the plan, decide how you will handle those before setting a time.

Make a free or low-cost shortlist

Use ideas as prompts, not a checklist that every couple or family must follow. Choose something accessible and practical for the people involved.

  • Walk a familiar route and take turns choosing a conversation topic.
  • Cook a meal using ingredients already in the house.
  • Visit a free local exhibition after checking opening times.
  • Try a shared puzzle or plan a future day out.

Keep the plan small enough to repeat

Agree a start and finish time so the activity fits around other commitments. If the plan falls through, choose another workable moment instead of abandoning the idea of shared time altogether.

Afterwards, ask what each person enjoyed and what they would change. That gives you a better starting point for next week than copying a generic list of ideal date nights.

ONE SMALL ACTION

Try this today.

Ask someone you want to spend time with: “What is one simple thing we could do together this week?” Agree a time and a spending limit.

Common questions

Does shared time have to be a date night?

No. A short walk, a quiet drink or a shared task can be a manageable place to begin.

What if we like different things?

Offer an option each, find an overlap or take turns choosing. Agree the budget and time together.
